Data Backup Types: Nowadays, data backup is an important strategy for protecting your important data from losses that occur due to various reasons like natural calamity, theft, technical errors, etc. 

Types Of Data Backup: 

There are four types of data backup and they are:

  • FULL DATA BACKUP: Full data backup is when you copy all the information in the database including all files and folders.                     

One of the greatest advantages of full data backup is the ability of data restoration, but on the other hand full backup itself consumes a huge amount of time.

INCREMENTAL BACKUP: Incremental data backup only those files which have undergone certain changes from the point where the full or differential backup has occurred.                   

  • The advantage of incremental data backup is that, unlike full data backups, incremental is much faster and consumes less storage space.
  • DIFFERENTIAL DATA BACKUP: Differential data backup only stores those files which undergo certain changes from a full backup. Differential takes quite less amount of time for backing up data and it consists of a fast restoring rate, but whenever new data is added then it consumes more storage space.
  • MIRROR DATA BACKUP: Mirror data backup is similar to full backup except that they can be password protected and files aren’t zip compressed. The greatest advantage of mirror backup is that they can back and restore data at a faster rate, but on the other hand they consume a lot of storage space.

METHODS OF DATA BACKUP: 

Some methods of data backup are:

  1. BACKUP DATA TO THE CLOUD: Cloud storage is a good option that helps in data backup: Providers use multiple storage servers in multiple locations, creating an additional backup for what’s already been backed up to the cloud.
  2. Cloud storage uses encryption systems to secure data.
  3. Information is accessible anywhere using an internet connection.
  4. Improves space efficiency since files are backed up & stored externally.
  • DMS SYSTEMS & CLIENT-SERVER BACKUPS: Client-server backups allow the information and records from all company computers to be backed up to a central server.
  • The client computers can be controlled by the server, allowing a single individual responsible for the server to manage DMS backups company-wide.
  • BACKUP SINGLE DEVICES WITH THE USE OF EXTERNAL HARD DRIVES: For a smaller company or individuals with personal work files, an alternative to large-scale client-server backups is using external hard drives for backups.

As the technology advances, storage capacity is growing while cost is going down slowly allowing some computers to be fully backed up to a single drive.

  • OFFSITE BACKUP STORAGE: Instead of losing important data due to various reasons like floods, earthquakes, theft, etc, having a physical copy of the data is always a safer option.

3-2-1 RULE OF BACKUP:

For backing up data you must follow the 3-2-1 rule which says:

  1. Keep 3 copies of all your data.
  2. Backup digital files to at least 2 formats.
  3. Keep 1 physical copy offsite in case of natural calamities like floods, earthquakes, etc.
